Paver Patio Design Options

Patio Design

You’ve taken the big step and decided it’s time to enhance your home with an outdoor living space that will be used for entertainment and family time. You’ve gone through Pinterest, FaceBook, and HGTV and you’ve decided in particular you want a patio design that compliments your home and the existing environment.

There are so many patterns and designs to choose from, as well as different types of pavers, made of various materials. There’s a world of ideas out there, but to help you decide, we’ve narrowed them down to a few great designs.

8 Paver Patio Designs To Choose From

Offset or Staggered Pattern

A staggered pattern is possibly
the simplest and most often-used design, but it has the potential to be the classiest and most versatile pattern. You can use any type of brick or pavers for a grid and it can work in pretty much any style of outdoor living space.

This pattern generally works great with rectangular pavers, as you can get a  neat staggered effect with this paver shape.

You could choose either large pavers or smaller bricks for this depending on your preferences and home style.

Herringbone Paver Design

The name might have you slightly stumped if you’re not familiar with the term, but you’ve seen it many times – it’s the v-shaped pattern.

Pavers (also generally rectangular pavers) are laid out in a v-shape, interlocking. This is a far more intricate pattern and looks spectacular in either a two-tone pattern or simply in one color.

Pavers & Stones

If you’d like to incorporate more texture in your patio design, especially if it’s a lovely courtyard-feel you’re going for, then bringing in stones with pavers is a great idea.

You would lay pavers down at intervals, with gaps in between, and fill the gaps with either stones or gravel. This is great for patios, courtyards, and even pathways between different areas in your backyard.

Grid Pattern

They say less is more and sometimes it’s absolutely true, especially with the landscaping design. A simple grid pattern works so well for a patio. Whether it’s your outdoor kitchen you’re paving or a larger area, a grid is simple and works well with any style of outdoor space.

You can also get creative with this paver patio design option by using a combination of square and rectangle pavers to create a geometric design. Or you could play around with different sizes. For example, you could have large square pavers surrounded by much smaller ones to create a neat, yet interesting visual effect.

Bands of Pavers

Design is all about creating
illusions and landscaping designs are no different. If you have a small or narrow patio area, you can create the illusion of space, by laying your pavers in bands with gravel or stone in between.

What do we mean by bands? Well, think of long straight lines and instead of having all your pavers laid out next to each other, you would have them in lines, either horizontally, or vertically, to draw your eye either lengthways or sideways.

Circular Layout

If you want to get creative (and you have a large enough space), a circular pattern is intricate and beautiful for patios. The bricks or pavers would be laid out in a circular pattern, radiating from the center of the patio to the outer edges.

If you’re very creative, you could go for a pattern of different colors, or you could keep it simple with a single color palette.

The circular pattern works incredibly well around a firepit, or even around a table or seating area.

Pavers & Grass Patterns

If one thinks of backyard parties, a beautiful green lawn, with perfectly spaced pavers comes to mind. If the style of your backyard is fairly classic and clean, this is a great style to upscale the patio area.

Pavers would be placed at equal distances apart. You could create a checkerboard look, or keep it simple in a grid style. You could even stagger the pavers as you would with a regular staggered paver pattern.

A Multi-colored Harmony

Sometimes playing with color patio design in the backyard is a challenge, especially when you have the colors of flowers and plants around you.

This is not always true. If your garden is simpler in style, then using different color bricks and pavers on your patio is a great way to spruce up the outdoor living area.

One would do this within reason of course. For example, if your color palette is red, then you could get different shades of red pavers, laid at intervals to form patterns. Or if it’s more neutral, you could use different shades of beige and brown.
